1 in 4 trees

On the farm we have planted 10,000 trees, including 1,500 chestnut trees. We are incredibly excited to reintroduce chestnuts as a staple crop to the southeast, where one out of every four trees used to be a chestnut tree. From eating them fresh, to roasting them, or for creating one of the best gluten-free flours available today, the culinary potential of chestnuts is endless, and our chestnut farmers in Tennessee see this as the perfect opportunity to diversify our pastures.

chestnuts provide ecosystem services

In addition to the culinary potential of chestnuts, the environmental and practical benefits of having trees planted throughout our pastures are numerous. Chestnut trees are a perennial nut tree that could potentially serve as a substitute for annual staple grains such as wheat. Additionally, our trees will help to provide shade to the animals in our pastures during those hottest summer months, effectively helping them to reduce their stress, aiding in weight gain, and eliminating the need for mobile shade structures. The rows of trees we planted can act as a natural barrier, working to mitigate the effects of harsh wind, sunlight, and drought, reduce erosion, and help maintain soil structure, provide habitat for various birds species, and of course sequester, or absorb, and store carbon from the atmosphere. These trees provide a great option for chestnut farmers in Tennessee who want to help their animals and the environment, while increasing the production of their farm.
