INTRODUCTION  

The Pig Production Lead (PPL)is part of the livestock department, reporting directly to the Head of Livestock. As part of the livestock department, their primary role is to work with the team to carry out much of the hard work that makes the way we manage our livestock as a regenerative farm so special. This includes rotating all livestock through pastures, intentional, creative pasture management, and maintaining a high degree of animal welfare. They work directly with cattle, sheep, pigs, and dogs. 

The PPL is responsible for coordinating and overseeing effective pig management from breeding all the way to slaughter. The PPL ensures that the sows are bred & farrow successfully, and that all pigs are fed, healthy, on fresh pasture as much as possible and that their needs are met at all times. 

The PPL has no direct reports, but will be responsible for leading crews on an as-needed basis. It is the responsibility of the PPL to work with the Head of Livestock to ensure department availability for pig project needs by looking ahead in the pig holistic grazing plan and life cycle calendar, as well as in response to day-to-day needs.  

This position works with the direction and support of the Head of Livestock, but has a considerable level of autonomy and responsibility, and will require strong initiative and organizational skills. The Head of Livestock, in consultation with the department, will set operational guidelines and provide training in their execution, but the PPL will also bring ideas for methods, systems and products, and will be given space to explore these when they are aligned with departmental goals and constraints. 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

  • Implement and maintain grazing plans that optimize animal health, performance, and land regeneration in coordination with the livestock team
  • Execute daily animal care routines efficiently and to high welfare standards, and escalate any health or welfare concerns immediately to the Head of Livestock and Ruminant Health Specialist
  • Maintain farm infrastructure (fences, gates, barns, equipment) in good working order and communicate maintenance needs to the Head of Livestock and Maintenance Manager
  • Design and lead the livestock team in executing a holistic grazing plan specific to the pig enterprise
  • Plan and coordinate all pig life cycle activities (breeding, farrowing, weaning, finishing) to ensure on-schedule execution through comprehensive annual calendar management
  • Maintain thorough, accurate, and current records of all pig-related activities and production metrics

OVERSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct detail oriented animal welfare & health checks
  • Rotate livestock through pastures according to a holistic grazing plan
  • Be part of the team in working all livestock for weights, vaccinations, and minor veterinary care 
  • Operate equipment for pasture maintenance and renovation & other projects as needed 
  • Trailer livestock, equipment, feed, etc. between farm properties and to processing facilities, etc. 
  • Carry out small repairs, maintenance, renovations, and other projects as needed
  • Lead the livestock team in pig fencing setups and moves
  • Select and order semen for breeding
  • Keep track of timing for heat checking & breeding sows
  • Keep track of farrowing timing and lead set up to get sows ready 
  • Keep track of piglet vaccination / castration timing & supply inventory
  • Keep track of piglet weaning timing and lead livestock team in carrying out logistics 
  • Monitor available pig feed levels and lead team in grinding & transporting feed as needed
  • Update pig feeding board & ensure livestock team is aware of any changes & nuances
  • Support the Head of Livestock in evaluating if pigs’ finishing time is not lining up with processing dates
  • Lead livestock team in getting pigs out of the field and weighing them before processing
  • Monitor all pig health and alert livestock team of any needed health or nutritional interventions
  • Keep thorough & up to date records of all pig inventory, health, breeding, birthing, feeding, and feed

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS 

  • Ability to lift 60lbs safely
  • Must love animals
  • Comfortability with the reality of animal mortality 
  • Ability to work outside on their feet for 8-12 hours a day, 5 days a week
  • Ability to keep up an attention to detail during monotonous tasks (Mindfulness)
  • Ability to keep a positive, grateful attitude and have fun!

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • Starting Hourly Wage = $17-21/hr.
  • 40-55 hours a week, 5 days a week, one weekend day may be required
  • More hours in the spring, summer, and fall (peak grazing seasons), less in the winter
  • Almost all hours will take place outside; rain, snow, and hot Tennessee summer days not exempt
  • We do try to minimize outside work during lightning & severe wind storms, bearing in mind a balance between animal welfare and human safety
  • 4 total farm properties where livestock may be located at a given time, may use personal vehicles or farm vehicles & equipment to commute between them (at most 13 miles away from each other)
  • Work primarily independently, sometimes with 1-2 other livestock team members
  • Many hours spent driving around the farm on an RTV, including down main roads to satellite farms at times
  • A few hours a week in a heated & air conditioned office with other members of the farm team for meetings, learning opportunities, discussions, etc. Full access to a full office kitchen for cooking, eating, making coffee, warming up or cooling off at any time.

INTRODUCTION  

The Vegetable and Crops Team Member takes responsibility for assisting on operations within the farm’s vegetable crops production systems, ensuring assigned tasks happen in a timely and effective manner, and with close attention to soil and ecosystem health. The Vegetables and Crops Team Member will assist in the execution of essential department operations needed to successfully meet the vegetable and crops production goals of the Vegetables and Crops Department, which are defined by the Head of Vegetables and Crops  in consultation with the Leadership Team and the department.  

The Vegetables and Crops Team Member has no direct reports, but will be responsible for supporting management and  crews on an as-needed basis. It is the responsibility of the Vegetables and Crops Team Member to work with and assist the Vegetables and Crops Production Lead in scheduling hours by looking ahead in the production calendar as well as in response to day-to-day needs. The Vegetables and Crops Team Member will be expected to assist with general duties outside of their direct accountabilities, including packing produce, the maintenance of all department areas/buildings to ensure a safe, production and clean work environment. 

This position works with the direction and support of the Vegetables and Crops Production Lead, but has a considerable level of autonomy and responsibility, and will require strong initiative and organizational skills. With the direction and consultation with the department, will assist in all areas of the Vegetables and Crops department  and meet expectations on production guidelines, crop oversight and tool usage and maintenance, and will be given space to explore areas of improvements if they are aligned with departmental goals and constraint elimination.

Vegetable and Crops Team Member

Position Summary

The Vegetable and Crops Team Member supports all aspects of vegetable and crop production. This role assists with planting, cultivating, harvesting, post-harvest handling, and general farm and equipment maintenance. The ideal candidate is reliable, adaptable, and comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with soil preparation, planting, transplanting, and direct seeding of vegetables and crops
  • Perform crop maintenance tasks including weeding, thinning, pruning, staking, and trellising
  • Support irrigation setup, monitoring, and basic maintenance
  • Apply fertilizers and soil amendments as directed
  • Monitor crops for pests, diseases, and nutrient deficiencies; report concerns to supervisor
  • Harvest crops according to quality and safety standards
  • Wash, sort, grade, and pack produce for distribution or sale
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of fields, greenhouses, and storage areas
  • Operate hand tools and basic farm equipment safely
  • Follow all safety, food safety, and farm protocols
  • Assist with general farm duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Previous farm or agricultural experience preferred but not required
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work (lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, standing for long periods)
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Basic knowledge of vegetables and crop production is an asset
  • Strong work ethic and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn and take direction

  • Field material application, removal and storage (row cover, shade cloth etc)

  • Compost management assistance
  • Maintain all areas of responsibilities clean and organized
  • Additional responsibilities include: assisting as needed in all other department areas, including nursery, field, compost, orchards, and all Company related activities, all used equipment maintenance and cleanness. 

DAILY/WEEKLY OVERSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Look ahead in task plan to ensure readiness for upcoming operations
  • Continuously monitor all areas of responsibility and plan as needed to ensure all expectations are met while responding to changing conditions
  • Work with the Vegetables and Crops Production Lead to ensure preparedness for all tasks
  • Communicate with the Vegetable and Crops Production Manager and Lead to understand current priorities, both for short-term and long-term activities within the department
  • Monitor the state of irrigation infrastructure and conduct any needed setup or repairs
  • Keep records of time spent within each assigned task.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS 

Repetitive motion, bending, crouching, squatting, long hours on a tractor and the ability to lift 50 lbs are all aspects of the position. Each employee is responsible for maintaining proper form and tool usage to avoid injury. 

This position is responsible for executing and monitoring a complex set of operations, and frequently facing competing priorities is a part of the job. The Vegetable and Crop Team Member must be able to prioritize their work, and to communicate clearly with the Vegetable and Crops Production Manager/Lead on what current needs and capacities are, reaching out for help early and often to avoid overwork and overwhelm. Both emotional intelligence and patience are required in working with team members, and proper steps must be taken to avoid burnout.

Must be able to work outside in most conditions, including hot, cold, and rainy weather conditions.
