On Ecosystem Collapse, the Meta-Crisis, and Why Your Dollar Is a Vote
Every April 22nd, we celebrate Earth Day. Social media is filled with green graphics, brands roll out sustainability campaigns, and for a moment, we collectively acknowledge that the planet we depend on is in trouble. Then, more or less, we move on.
I want to make the case that we can't afford to move on anymore, and I want to do it honestly, with some science in hand, without catastrophizing, and with something genuinely useful to say at the end.
The Engine Is Slowing Down
Let's start with something that should stop us cold.
Ecologists have long assumed that as climate change accelerates, ecosystems would respond in kind, with faster species turnover and more rapid reshuffling of biological communities as organisms tracked shifting conditions. More change, more quickly. It seemed logical.
A major study published earlier this year in Nature Communications, drawing on one of the largest global biodiversity databases ever assembled, found the opposite. Across marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems, spanning birds, fish, invertebrates, and plants, the rate at which species are replacing one another in local habitats has slowed by roughly one-third since the 1970s. Nature is not speeding up. It is grinding down.
The lead researcher described it this way: ecosystems function like a self-repairing engine, constantly cycling out old components and replacing them with new ones. That engine, across the globe, is losing momentum. And the likely culprit isn't climate change directly. It is the shrinking of regional species pools. When habitat destruction, pollution, and land conversion reduce the diversity of species available to colonize and renew local communities, the cycle of natural renewal slows. A quieter ecosystem is not a healthier one. It is one running out of parts.
This finding matters beyond ecology. Biodiversity isn't just a conservation concern. It is the operational substrate of agriculture. A 2024 review published in Biology Letters examined eight major commodity crops and asked a pointed question: are the same agricultural practices destroying biodiversity also undermining the ecosystem services those farms depend on? For crops like coffee, cocoa, and soybean, the answer was yes. The loss of ants, bees, and birds, key functional groups for pollination and pest control, is measurably threatening the productivity of the very systems responsible for their decline. We are, in the most literal sense, sawing off the branch we're sitting on.
The explosive growth of the commercial pollination service industry is no sign of agricultural innovation. It is a market response to the destruction of the free ecosystem service that wild pollinators once provided. We have industrialized the replacement of something that nature gave us for free, and we are now paying hundreds of millions of dollars a year for a degraded, fragile, trucked-in substitute. That is what it looks like when you draw down ecological capital without accounting for it. The service doesn't disappear, it just gets commodified and billed.
The Ground Beneath Our Feet
Nowhere is this more visible, or more consequential, than in our soil.
Geologist David Montgomery, in a landmark study published in PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), compiled erosion data from over 200 studies across every major agricultural region on Earth. What he found is stark: conventional tillage, the mechanical manipulation of soil, erodes soil at a rate 10 to 100 times faster than natural soil formation processes can replace it.
The median erosion rate under conventional agriculture runs about 1 millimeter per year. Natural soil production is roughly 0.017 to 0.036 millimeters per year. The math on that discrepancy, extended over the centuries required to build and maintain a civilization, is not encouraging. Montgomery notes that this constraint tracks reasonably well with the historical lifespans of major civilizations, most of which lasted a few hundred to a few thousand years before their agricultural base collapsed under them.
This is not ancient history. It is a process that continues today, on most of the cropland on Earth.
The counterpoint is also in Montgomery's data. No-till and conservation agriculture methods reduce erosion by a median factor of 20, and in some cases by more than 100, bringing agricultural erosion rates into alignment with natural soil formation. The knowledge to do this differently already exists. What has been missing is the economic and cultural incentive to deploy it at scale.
The Crisis Below the Surface of Crises
The biodiversity slowdown, the topsoil loss, the forest tipping points, these are real and serious. But they are symptoms. They are the visible surface of something deeper.
The root is a civilization organized around a particular relationship with growth. The assumption that economic expansion is not only desirable but necessary, that the natural world exists primarily as input and externality, and that the future is a place we extract from rather than one we inherit.
The industrialization of food production, the consolidation, the chemical dependencies, the extraction of soil carbon, the simplification of landscapes into monocultures, is one of the most direct expressions of this extractive logic. When we ask why our ecosystems are losing their capacity to self-repair, or why our topsoil is disappearing at geologic timescales compressed into decades, the answer routes back through the same set of incentives, institutions, and assumptions.
Knowing this can feel paralyzing. It's tempting to either look away or sink into helplessness in the face of something so large.
The path between apathy and despair is narrow. Let's walk it together.
What Forests Know
Scientists studying global forest health have found, using satellite data and machine learning across 20 years of observations, that forests worldwide are losing their capacity to recover from disturbances, fires, droughts, logging, storms. Not all at once. Gradually. An estimated 3.3 billion tons of carbon in annual forest productivity is now operating near critical thresholds. Past a certain point, some of these forests will not recover. They will convert, permanently, into different ecosystem types. A rainforest becoming a savanna is not a temporary setback. It is a state change.
But the same science tells us something else: the tipping point has not been crossed. The Amazon is losing resilience, it has been for decades, but the trajectory is not yet fixed. The window is not closed.
This is not optimism. It is a precise reading of where we are. And it has a direct implication: what we do now, in the next decade, in the choices we make every week, matters in ways that choices made twenty years from now will not.
What You Can Actually Do
The scale of these problems can make individual action feel trivial. What does buying a CSA share from a regenerative farm matter when the problem is civilizational?
More than you think.
The most powerful thing a consumer can do in a market economy is direct capital toward the things they want to exist. Markets are not neutral. They are responsive to sustained, aggregated choices. And right now, one of the most consequential choices available to you is to support businesses that are managing their land, their labor, and their supply chains in ways that regenerate rather than extract.

The global problems we face will not be solved by consumer choice alone. They require policy change, institutional reform, and cultural transformation. But the direction of those larger changes is shaped by what the market signals are worth responding to. Regenerative businesses that cannot survive economically will not be around to scale. Those that thrive create proof of concept, attract capital, train the next generation of farmers, and demonstrate that a different relationship between agriculture and the living world is possible.
So, vote with your dollar. Support farms and businesses that are actively restoring what extraction has degraded. Look at your food system, who grew it, how the land was managed, how the people were treated, and what the business model incentivizes. If you have the means to make these choices, you already know it. Use that position. Think about the people who will inherit what we are building right now. The work that Earth Day points toward is not a day. It is a daily practice. The ecosystems that sustain us don't take a day off, and neither does the pressure they're under.
Neither can we.
