Eating with the seasons is one of the most meaningful parts of participating in an Organic Vegetable CSA. It encourages us to cook with what’s growing right now and appreciate the foods that naturally show up throughout the year.
Here in Middle Tennessee, winter is often the toughest stretch of the growing season. Short days, cold temperatures, and unpredictable weather make crop production challenging, even in protected spaces like our high tunnels. During this time our team works hard to protect crops, care for the land, and support the people doing the work. Growing USDA Certified Organic produce year round requires constant attention to soil health, infrastructure, and the wellbeing of our farm crew.
Even with those challenges, our goal stays the same. To provide our CSA family, wholesale partners, and market shoppers with nourishing food throughout the year.
We know winter CSA shares can feel a little less exciting than the colorful abundance of summer. But this season is a great opportunity to lean into comforting meals and wholesome recipes that make the most of hardy winter vegetables.
Root vegetables get an unfair reputation. They’re humble and earthy, but they’re also some of the most reliable and nourishing crops we grow. Sweet potatoes, Hakurei turnips, rutabaga, carrots, and other storage crops hold up beautifully through the winter months. When roasted, braised, or baked into hearty dishes, they become deeply flavorful and incredibly satisfying.
Recently, our Farm Director Asher made a root vegetable pot pie for his family using vegetables similar to what many of you are receiving in your CSA shares. This wholesome family recipe quickly became a staff favorite around the farm and we’re excited to share it with you. It’s warm, comforting, and a perfect way to use up seasonal root vegetables from your farm share.
We’re right on the edge of a new growing season and fresh spring greens will be here before we know it. But before we move on, it feels right to celebrate the vegetables that carried us through winter.
If you’re interested in cooking more seasonal, locally grown food, consider joining our CSA. Our members enjoy year round access to USDA Certified Organic vegetables grown right here in Middle Tennessee, along with the recipes and inspiration to help make the most of every share.
Enjoy this cozy recipe before the seasons shift!Â
